CiteWise resolves a raw reference against scholarly metadata providers, compares identifiers and publication fields, and returns a decision, confidence score, contradictions, and candidate evidence.
Do I need a DOI?
No. A DOI is a strong signal, but CiteWise can search by title, authors, year, journal, pages, volume, and issue when an identifier is missing.
Is the confidence score generated by an LLM?
No. Verification confidence comes from deterministic matching and provider evidence. Optional AI suggestions are kept separate from provider-backed facts.
What happens when sources disagree?
CiteWise surfaces conflicting fields, provider diagnostics, and bounded candidate matches instead of silently combining metadata from different works.
Is there a free plan?
Yes. An authenticated Free workspace includes 10 provider-backed reference checks each month and does not require a credit card. Pro includes 500 monthly checks, and Team / Lab includes 3,000; both add Batch and API access.
How do one-time credit packs work?
Credit packs add checks to a workspace without changing its subscription permissions. CiteWise consumes the monthly allowance first, then uses the credit balance. Packs do not unlock API, Batch, rate, or concurrency features.
Can I cancel or resume my subscription?
Yes. You can schedule cancellation from Billing and keep paid access through the end of the current period. Before that date, you can resume renewal without purchasing again. One-time credit packs are not removed when a subscription is canceled.

CiteWise is an evidence-backed citation verification engine that resolves academic references against scholarly metadata providers and returns an auditable citation report.
Which citation fields can CiteWise verify?
CiteWise can verify title, authors, journal, publication year, volume, issue, pages, DOI, ISSN, ISBN, and publisher when provider evidence is available.
Which scholarly sources does CiteWise use?
CiteWise can compare records from Crossref, OpenAlex, Semantic Scholar, PubMed, and arXiv, depending on the reference and provider availability.
Can CiteWise correct a reference automatically?
CiteWise proposes provider-backed field corrections while preserving the original reference; unresolved conflicts remain visible for human review.
Which citation styles can CiteWise render?
CiteWise currently renders APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago author-date, IEEE, Vancouver, and GB/T 7714 for the supported journal-article fields.
Can I use CiteWise through an API?
Yes. Pro and Team workspaces can create scoped API keys and use the citation, evidence, correction, rendering, and batch job endpoints.
Does CiteWise replace editorial or scholarly review?
No. CiteWise exposes evidence and uncertainty to improve quality control, but researchers and editors remain responsible for the final citation decision.
